why is sustainable design important ?

why is sustainable design important ?

Sustainable Design is important for our Mother Earth. One of the important focus of Sustainable Design is to preserve the natural resources and use them with caution so as to protect our Mother Earth from devastation.

The above definition is based on two concepts:

  1. The concept of needs, comprising of the conditions for maintaining an acceptable life standard for all people and
  2. The concept of limits of the capacity of the environment to fulfil the needs of the present and the future, determined by the state of technology and social organization.

Architecture and Sustainability Factors

Architecture presents a unique challenge in the field of sustainability. Building construction typically consumes large quantities of materials while producing tons of waste. It sometimes involves comparing the preservation of buildings of historical significance with new developments.

Sustainable construction may therefore be defined as “creation and responsible management of a healthy built environment based on ecological principles”. Sustainable buildings, therefore, aim to lessen their impact on our environment through efficiency in energy and resources.

It involves the following principles:

  • To enhance natural environment.
  • To minimise consumption of non-renewable resources.
  • To eliminate or to minimise use of hazardous materials.

A sustainable building may also be defined as the one that has a minimum adverse impact on the built and natural environment, in terms of the building itself and its immediate surroundings as a minimum. A rational use of natural resources and appropriate management during construction will contribute to saving useful resources, reducing power consumption and improving environment quality.

The importance of finding a sustainable future depends on three key issues:

1) Fossil fuel depletion.

2) Climate change due to CO2 emissions.

3) Increasing costs of water & energy.

After the industrial revolution, the world’s industrialized nations have depended on access to “cheap” fossil fuel energy. It is known that fossil fuels are a limited resource. As other nations become more and more industrialized, the international demand for fossil fuels continues to increase, and along with it the CO2 emissions. The world is witnessing a steady increase in energy prices for energy from other sources which is placing an increasing burden on world economy.

The importance of Sustainable Architecture

1. We all know how much our homes mean to us. With the help of sustainable architecture, a green design can successfully combine beauty and functionality together and contribute to saving our planet.

2. Green architecture i.e. sustainable architecture, is created by ‘green architects’ who value the earth and understand the need for an organic architecture. Earlier, solar powered homes were hugely expensive. And the idea of a green home was beyond thinking.

What is Sustainable design ?

What is Sustainable design ?

Sustainable (structural) design refers to integration of social, environmental and economic considerations into product, process and energy system design. Sustainable engineering encourages the consideration of the complete product and process lifecycle during the design with the purpose of minimizing environmental impacts over the (structure) lifecycle while simultaneously maximizing social and economic benefits.  Sustainable Design requires efficient planning & designing sustainable structures, for example, buildings & infrastructure, to maximize their contribution to the environment. This can be achieved in various ways some of which are by green architecture, performance-based structural design, energy systems, smart electrical grids, waste water treatment, renewable power generation etc. Aim should be to focus on materials in order to get an understanding of the effect it will have on life and environment.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a widely used green building rating system in the world. It is available for residential buildings, commercial buildings such as hospitals, schools, communities and even industrial buildings such as warehouses etc. It provides a framework to create healthy, efficient and cost-saving green buildings. LEED certification is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement. LEED buildings save energy, water, resources, generate less waste and support human health. LEED buildings attract tenants, have less operational costs and enhance employee productivity and retention.
